I'm intrigued by the "escaped" production, it looks like this:

}}}
where {{{ESCAPE}}} is a tilde and {{{STAR}}} is an asterisk. I'm not sure how it implements the rather elaborate escaping rules, and why the double asterisk is so special as opposed to, for example, double slash.
